The awards signal a continued push by Space Systems Command to diversify the commercial base underpinning the service’s orbital communications backbone rather than consolidate around a single provider.
The SDT effort is part of the broader Space Data Network program, which seeks to use commercial satellite infrastructure to move data between spacecraft and ground stations — a function that has grown in strategic importance as the Pentagon fields more sensors, communications satellites, and in-orbit capabilities that require persistent, resilient connectivity. The expansion of the vendor pool mirrors a pattern GDD has tracked across Space Force acquisition, including related efforts to harden ground-station networks against adversary disruption.

Five New Awards, No Ceiling Disclosed
