Stoltenberg Highlights Türkiye Defence Role
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg used a visit to Türkiye to emphasize the central role of defence industrial capacity ahead of a forthcoming Allied summit in Ankara, highlighting the country’s growing strategic importance within the alliance.
According to the article “NATO Secretary General visits Türkiye in preparation for Ankara Summit, underlines importance of defence industry,” published on NATO’s official website, the visit formed part of broader preparations for a high-level gathering expected to focus on strengthening collective defence and accelerating cooperation across allied defence sectors.
During meetings with Turkish leaders, Stoltenberg underscored the need for NATO members to expand production capabilities, reduce supply chain vulnerabilities, and deepen industrial collaboration at a time of heightened geopolitical instability. He pointed to lessons learned since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which exposed gaps in ammunition stockpiles and highlighted the urgency of scaling up manufacturing across the alliance.
Türkiye’s defence sector featured prominently in discussions. Stoltenberg praised the country’s expanding industrial base, noting its contributions to NATO missions and capabilities, including in areas such as unmanned systems and advanced military technologies. He also reiterated NATO’s expectation that allies continue to increase defence spending and invest in innovation to maintain a credible deterrent posture.
The visit comes as NATO intensifies efforts to align political commitments with industrial output. Defence ministers in recent months have repeatedly stressed that pledges to raise spending must be matched by tangible increases in production capacity. The Ankara summit is expected to further address these issues, alongside broader concerns including regional security, deterrence, and support for Ukraine.
Talks in Türkiye also touched on alliance cohesion and regional dynamics, particularly in the Black Sea and Middle East. Stoltenberg affirmed Türkiye’s role as a key ally positioned at the intersection of multiple strategic theatres, while calling for continued cooperation on shared security challenges.
By foregrounding industrial readiness ahead of the summit, NATO leadership appears intent on shifting focus from long-term pledges to immediate deliverables. As outlined in the NATO website report, the Secretary General framed defence production not only as a logistical necessity but as a cornerstone of the alliance’s credibility in an increasingly contested security environment.
