MQ-9B SkyGuardian to Carry Kongsberg’s JSM in New Strike Integration Program

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace have announced a joint effort to integrate the Joint Strike Missile onto the MQ-9B SkyGuardian unmanned aircraft, a pairing that would extend the platform’s precision strike range well beyond what current weapons configurations allow. The partnership was reported by Naval News in its coverage of the program announcement. The JSM is a low-observable, air-launched cruise missile developed by Kongsberg that is already qualified on the F-35, making it one of the few weapons in Western inventories capable of internal carriage on a fifth-generation fighter. Integrating it onto the MQ-9B would bring that long-range, anti-surface and land-attack capability to an uncrewed platform that operates at significantly lower cost per flight hour than a manned strike aircraft.

What the Weapon Brings to an Uncrewed Platform
The JSM is designed for stand-off engagements, allowing a launch aircraft to release the weapon at distance before entering heavily defended airspace. Placing that capability on the MQ-9B would give joint force commanders a persistent, lower-signature option for strikes against high-value surface targets — naval vessels in particular — without exposing a crewed aircraft or crew to threat envelopes. The missile’s ability to navigate complex terrain and engage moving maritime targets has been a key selling point in European and Indo-Pacific procurement discussions.
The MQ-9B itself is the maritime and extended-endurance variant of General Atomics’ Reaper-lineage aircraft, certified to fly in non-segregated airspace under STANAG 4671 airworthiness standards. Its wing hardpoints and payload capacity make it a viable host for a weapon of the JSM’s class, though officials have not confirmed specific integration timelines or the number of rounds the aircraft would carry per sortie under the announced effort.

Strategic Fit and Alliance Implications
The GA-ASI and Kongsberg arrangement reflects a broader pattern of U.S. and European defense firms combining platforms and munitions to address gaps in allied strike inventories. Kongsberg is a Norwegian state-linked defense company with deep NATO relationships, and the JSM is already embedded in allied procurement planning through F-35 partner nations. Extending the missile to an uncrewed airframe operated by multiple allied air forces could accelerate fielding timelines and reduce the cost burden of maintaining crewed strike capacity for lower-intensity contingencies.
The MQ-9B is currently operated or on order by several U.S. partners, and a JSM-capable variant would immediately be relevant to nations seeking affordable maritime strike depth — particularly in the Baltic and Indo-Pacific regions where anti-access environments are a central planning concern. The program announcement did not specify which customer nations, if any, had already expressed interest in a JSM-armed MQ-9B configuration, and neither company has disclosed funding levels or contract structures for the integration work.
