Expending high-cost missiles to defeat cheap drones is an exchange ratio that defense planners have flagged as economically and logistically unsustainable — a calculus that has gained renewed urgency as unmanned systems continue to reshape the character of modern conflict. The drone threat’s growing complexity, including the emergence of AI-enabled autonomous platforms, adds another layer that the task force must prepare for even as it works to address immediate operational shortfalls.
